Clematis 'Sunset'

 
Description: Sunset is light purple with a dark pink stripe down the center of the petal. White stamen. Green leaves. 8-10' in height.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Flowers are 6" across and, blooms will arrive from June to September.

Clematis 'Cartmanni Joe'

 
Description: Panicles of small, sturdy white flowers. Beige or white anthers on yellow filaments. The foliage is evergreen and quite recognizable. It is dark green, and glossy with a lacey appearance.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support and protection from strong winds.
Bloom: flowers are 1-1.5" across. A welcome sight in early spring. The only pruning it needs is to remove the weak or dead stems.

Clematis Montana'Tetra rose'

 
Description: A very satisfying clematis to grow. Hardy and vigorous. Can reach heights of 20' and more. Leaves have a purple touch to them.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Masses of light pink flowers that are scented appear in May - June depending on how much sun it receives. You only need to cut out dead or weak stems after bloom, but this is not necessary if you are going for a sprawling effect.

Clematis Armandii 'Snowdrift'

 
Description: White with a possible tinge of green or pink on the outside of the flower near the base. The foliage is evergreen and very recognizable. Dark green leaves that are long and tapered up to 6" or more.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support and protection from strong winds. Not partial to damp cold.
Bloom: Clusters of flowers 5-7" across come out in early spring with a very sweet scent. The only pruning it needs is to remove the weak or dead stems.
 

Clematis Montana 'Wilsonii'

 
Description: Similar in growth habit to tetra rose. Leaves are a bright green though. Can reach heights of 35' or more.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Will start to bloom anywhere from May to July depending on how much sun it receives. Flowers are about 2" wide. Bright white in color. You only need to cut out dead or weak stems after bloom, but this is not necessary if you are going for a sprawling effect.

Clematis 'Jackmanii'

 
Description: Probably the most well known clematis. This one is very easy to grow. Dark purple with white stamens, and green leaves. Mature height can be 12-20' tall.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Flowers are 4-6" across, but only 4 petals so they seem smaller. They are produced from mid June to August. Cut back late Feb or March to 2 strong buds on each stem. The blooms will form on the currant years growth.

Clematis 'paniculata' ( maximowicziana ) ( Sweet autumn )

 
Description: Flowers are a crisp white with light green leaves. Mature height is 20 30'. This one is native to Asia. In milder climates it can be evergreen.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Masses of small 1" flowers start in mid summer to early autumn. You can light prune in Feb-Mar with varying heights in stems or you can prune down hard to 2 strong sets of buds on each stem. Bloom will come on current year's growth.
 

Clematis 'Perle D' Azure'

 
Description: A very old variety with sky blue flowers and a faint pink stripe down the center. Green stamen and green leaves. Mature height is 10-15' tall.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Flowers start in June to September. They are 4-6" across. Cut back late Feb or March to 2 strong buds on each stem. The blooms will form on the currant years growth.
 

Clematis 'Piccadilly'

 
Description: This flower is a deep purple with paler streaks down the petal and bright yellow stamen. 8-12' in height. Seems to be more prone to clematis wilt here.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Flowers appear in May, June, and September. 4-6" across. You need only prune out the dead or weak stems after it has bloomed. If it does wilt on you cut back to healthy growth behind and it should come back.

Clematis 'Ramona'

 
Description: Ramona takes my breath away. She is beautiful. This one is a robins egg blue with almost purple stamen, although I have seen photos of petals in more of a lavender shade. Mature height is 10-15' tall.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.

Description: Flower is magenta with white stamen. Green leaves. Height is 4-6 ' or more.

Clematis 'Jackmanii x superba '

 
Description: This one is similar to the more common dark purple Jackmanii, but has a fuller flower Stamen are white. Mine also has a paler stripe down the center of the petal. Green leaves. 12-20' high.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Flowers are 4-6" across, and will be seen from June through August. Cut back late Feb or March to 2 strong buds on each stem. The blooms will form on the currant years growth.
 

Fremontodendron 'California Glory' ( Flannel Bush )

 
Description: Really should be in shrubs, but I use it like a vine. Fast growing 6'- 20' tall. Leathery leaves are dark green above , and tiny, brown, bristly hairs creating a felt like appearance. In texture there is nothing felt like about them. Touching the underside of the leaves will leave you itching for hours. Like fine cactus spines. The stem is thick, woody.
Ideal conditions: Dry, loose, well draining soil. This one is on borrowed time here with our winters being on the edge of it's tolerance. I keep it against a hot south facing wall like a rose, and so far so good. It is prone to sudden death though.
Bloom: Bright, yellow flowers tinged orange on the outside to 3" across or more. Prolific bloom throughout mid to late summer.
 
 

Hedera baltica ( Variegated ivy )

 
Description: Small leafed ivy. This one has a white and green pattern.
Ideal conditions: Part sun to light shade. Leaf color fades out in hot sun. Grows faster in moderately moist soil.
Bloom: none

Hedera ( helix ) 'English Ivy'

 
Description: Dark green leaves 3-5" across. Be very cautious with this plant as it can and will take over. Very hard to stop if you change your mind! Banned in some areas.
Ideal conditions: Average soil. .Regular water. Will establish quickly.
Bloom: Has cream flower in spring early summer.
 

Hedera colchica dentata 'variegata' ( Persian Ivy )

 
Description: Oval to heart shaped leaves. 3-7" wide to 10" long
Ideal conditions: Average soil. Regular water until established. Shaded roots seems to get them going. Prune back regularly to make it fill out and once it has reached its boundaries.
Bloom: none
 

Humulus 'lupulus' ( common hop )

 
Description: This is a deciduous vine traditionally used for flavoring beer. Bright green serrated edge leaves have 3-5 lobes. Extremely fast growing. can reach 8' or more in a year. Stems are almost square and with fine hairs.
Ideal conditions: Full sun with loose composted soil, and regular water. Cut stems to the ground after frost turns them brown. Needs support.
Bloom: Most potted plants sold are the female, which bears the flowers. They are soft flaky 1-2" light green cones of bracts and blossoms that emit a fresh piney fragrance. The tender top shoots can be cooked as a vegetable.

Hydrangea 'petiolaris' ( climbing hydrangea )

 
Description: A fast growing, self adhereing deciduous climber that can reach up to 60' tall. Bark is reddish brown and flaky. Leaves are bright green and glossy 2-4" long and almost heart shaped. Large white lacecap flowers.
Ideal conditions: Any soil seems to work. Regular water for lots of blooms. Shade in the afternoon in hot areas. Can be shaped easily. Prune in dormant season.
Bloom: Flowers are the lacecap variety 6-10" across appear in mid summer.
 

Lonicera x brownii 'Dropmore scarlet' ( Scarlet trumpet honeysuckle )

 
Description: Deciduous vine which climbs 9-10'. Leaves are round with a blueish green color, and set in pairs. Older stems are woody.
Ideal conditions: Composted soil with good drainage will give you a vigorous vine with many flowers. Regular water an full sun or part shade.
Bloom: Flowers are bright reddish orange. Each one is trumpet shaped and set in a cluster. They start to show in late spring to early summer until frost. Cut out any old canes that have stopped flowering before spring growth appears.

Clematis 'Vagabond'

 
Description: Vagabonde is dark purple with a magenta stripe down the petal and white stamen. Green leaves. Height is 8-12'.
Ideal conditions: Plant roots in the shade and train the new shoots to the sun. Well drained with regular water. Loose, composted soil. Needs support.
Bloom: Flowers are 6-8" across. Stunning ! May -June and September if you're lucky. Lightly prune out weak or dead stems after bloom.
