Magnolia stelata 'royal star'

 
Description: A sturdy, deciduous, flowering shrub. Multi trunk. Can be cut back right after flowering. Moderate grower to 15' X 15' if left alone.
Ideal conditions: Full sun on coast for lots of blooms. Regular water, but can tolerate a drought. Well drained soil with organic matter.
Bloom: Early to mid spring will bring loose star shaped white blooms.

Calluna Vulgaris 'Dark Star' & 'Kinlochcruel' ( Heather )

 
Description: Hardy, evergreen, low growing shrub. Leaves are almost needle like, but soft. ( D.S. ) is smaller than some at 8"tall x 14" wide while ( K ) is 10" tall x 16" wide. Leaf and flower face up like spikes.
Ideal conditions: Sun. Well drained acidic soil. Takes salt wind well. Great for an exposed location.
Bloom: Both of these bloom from August to October. Dark Star is a semi double dark reddish purple. Kinlochruel is a double white.
 

Erica x darleyensis 'Silberschmeize' ( Heath )

 
Description: Hardy, evergreen, low growing shrub 14" tall x 30 " wide if sheared regularly. Leaves are almost needle like, but soft. Flowers hang down and make the branches droop. This one is a vigorous grower.
Ideal conditions: Sun. Well drained acidic soil. Takes salt wind well. Great for an exposed location.
Bloom: Masses of white flowers with orange brown tips from December to May.
 

Philadelphus 'Virginalis'

 
Description: 6-8 ' tall and wide. Deciduous flowering shrub. Arching branches create a white fountain effect.
Ideal conditions: Sun to part shade. Regular water until established. Can take drought. Well drained soil.
Bloom: Fragrant white double flowers appearing in late spring to early summer.

Philadelphus 'Coronarius' ( Sweet mock orange )

 
Description: Strong growing old favorite. 10-12' tall and wide. Deciduous flowering shrub.
Ideal conditions: Sun to part shade. Regular water until established. Can take drought. Well drained soil.
Bloom: Fragrant 1 1/2" flowers appearing in late spring to early summer.

Hebe buxifolia ( boxleaf hebe )

 
Description: Evergreen Shrub rounded and symmetrical 3-4'' high and wide. Great hedge. Deep green 1/3" long leaves on green stems. Prefers mild winter and cool summer conditions.
Ideal conditions: Well drained soil. Sun to part sun. Regular water. Compost/and or mulch to cover shallow roots. Can be sheared after bloom.
Bloom: Masses of white flowers in early summer.

Viburnum tinus 'Spring bouquet' ( laurustinus )

 
Description: 6-12' dark green leafed evergreen shrub. Excellent for a loosely shaped blooming screen or hedge.
Ideal conditions: Average soil. Regular water until mature on coast. Grows more full in a protected location. Sun to part sun.
Bloom: Starts with deep pink buds turning to a spray of small white flower, then blue black berries that last into the summer.

Viburnum tomentosum 'Summer snowflake'

 
Description: 4-6' wide and tall deciduous shrub. Leaves are similar in size coarseness as bodnantense.
Ideal conditions: Sun- part shade. Better blooms in sun. Average soil with regular water.
Bloom: Flat 2-4" white lacecap flower heads. Fruit is red aging to black, but not always prolific.

Pieris Japonica 'Cascade' ( Lily of the valley shrub )

 
Description: Medium height, evergreen shrub. Reaches 4-5' in height and width.
Ideal conditions: Takes full sun on coast or bright shade. Dislikes drying winds. Good composted soil. Regular water.
Bloom: Early spring brings masses of tendrils up to 7" long that cascade full of creamy white flowers. Blooms last a long time.

Deutzia 'gracilis' (slender deutzia)

 
Description: 2-4' tall can reach 6' if its very happy. 3-4' wide. Deciduous graceful arching branches with bright green saw edged leaves up to 2.5" long.
Ideal conditions: Full sun in cooler climates. Regular water. Seems to do well in a variety of soils as long as there is good drainage.
Bloom: Masses of small white flowers in mid spring similar to lily of the valley.
 

Camellia japonica 'Pinky white'

 
Description: Evergreen shrub of medium height. Bright green to dark glossy leaf.
Ideal conditions: Grow and bloom best when protected from strong sun. Mature plants will tolerate it but flowers tend to get rusty and die quicker in these conditions. Average soil. Organic matter gets a better leaf color. Moderate to regular water.
Bloom: Early to late spring depending on variety.

Oleria x Haastii

 
Description: A hardy evergreen plant from New Zealand. Well suited to our coastal climate. Stiff upright growth. Leaves are 3/4" long. Shiny and dark green on top with white underneath.
Ideal conditions: Seems to enjoy drainage with compost/mulch and periodic water through the summer. Full sun on the coast with a steady sea breeze.
Bloom: Starting in mid summer it's covered in white flowers that smell a little funky like a daisy
 

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Madame Emile Mouillere' ( Big leaf Hydrangea )

 
Description: This mophead is prolific. It gets 2' cut off it every fall and it grows right back up next year. It's kept at about 5-6' tall. Large bright green leaves.
Ideal conditions: Takes full sun on the coast, but this one is mostly in shade. Rich, soil. Water regularly especially in the sun.
Bloom: This type blooms persistently even when cut back harshly in the fall. I've read that it's because of the mild temperature of our winter. It should be pruned hard in summer if size is an issue. The flowers start in mid summer and continue until frost. Large heads of white with faint blue in the center . The smaller heads have a chartruese tinge to them ( as pictured here) until they mature.
 

Hydrangea paniculata 'Kyushu'

 
Description: Large deciduous shrub 15-25' in height and almost as wide. Give this pet some room! Leaves are smaller and thicker than other hydrangeas. They are bright green, and glossy.
Ideal conditions: Place where it has room to reach it's full potential in the sun or part shade. Soil should be rich and watered regularly.
Bloom: Flowers grow on single stem firming a column shaped cluster ( panicle ) They bloom in early summer to late. The panicle is a mixture of sterile and fertile flowers.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Teller's White' ( Libelle )

 
Description: Medium size deciduous shrub 5' tall x 5' wide. Sold as Teller's white in North America, and Libelle elsewhere. Very large leaves
Ideal conditions: Sun on the coast to part shade. Rich soil. Regular water.
Bloom: Flowers start mid summer and carry through until frost. White, laceleaf.

Hydrangea Macrophylla 'Marisii Perfecta'

 
Description: Vigorous growing deciduous shrub up to 6' x 6'. Bright green leaves.
Ideal conditions: Can take full sun on the coast, but shows better in partial shade. Drained, but rich soil with regular water.
Bloom: Lacecap flowers appear in mid summer, and continue until frost. The color is very pale blue. The sterile flowers tend to crowd the fertile creating a more crowded lacecap than in other varieties.
 

Clematis heracleifolia 'China purple' ( Bush Clematis )

 
Description: Deciduous small shrub reaching 3-4' tall in maturity, and 2-3' wide. A slow grower that likes to ramble over other shrubs if left unstaked. Leaves are dark green and set in threes. Stems are sturdy , and upright.
Ideal conditions: Tolerant of most soil types as long as it has drainage with regular water. Full sun to part. Best if cut down in early spring to about 3" tall. Very easy care. I tend to forget about it until I see it in bloom.
Bloom: Flowers appear in late summer to early fall. Dark blue with streaks of lighter shades. Flowers are set similar to scillia ( blue bells ), or Hyacinth, but not as many on the stem.
