Calluna Vulgaris 'Corbett's Red' ( Heather )

 
Description: Hardy, evergreen, low growing shrub. Leaves are almost needle like, but soft. Average size with shearing is 10" tall x 16" wide. Leaf and flower face up like spikes.
Ideal conditions: Sun. Well drained acidic soil. Takes salt wind well. Great for an exposed location. 
Bloom: August to October is the bloom time for this type. Its color is a deep pink. The leaf spikes seem to have a golden hue added to the green by the end of summer.

Erica x darleyensis 'George Rendall' ( Heath )

 
Description: Hardy, evergreen, low growing shrub 12" tall x 26" wide or more. Leaves are almost needle like, but soft. In spring the leaf tips have pink or cream colored tips. Flowers hang down and make the branches droop.
Ideal conditions: Sun. Well drained acidic soil. Takes salt wind well. Great for an exposed location.
Bloom: Bloom time on this type is November to May. Color starts at medium pink and darkens to a redder pink.

Erica x darleyensis 'Archie Grahm' ( Heath )

 
Description: Hardy, evergreen, low growing shrub 20 " tall x 24 " wide if sheared regularly. This one gets bushy. Leaves are almost needle like, Flowers hang down and make the branches droop.
Ideal conditions: Sun. Well drained acidic soil. Takes salt wind well. Great for an exposed location.
Bloom: December to April will bring you blooms of deep pink.
 

Erica carnea 'March Seedling' ( Heath )

 
Description: Very cold resistant it's one of the hardiest types of heath. This evergreen, low growing shrub can stay at 8" tall x 20 " wide if sheared regularly. Leaves are almost needle like, Flowers hang down and make the branches droop.
Ideal conditions: Sun. Well drained acidic soil. Takes salt wind well. Great for an exposed location.
Bloom: February to May bring a two toned flower. Deep pink at the base getting lighter towards the top with a dark brown almost black center.

Photinia fraseri ( Red Robin Photinia)

 
Description: Evergreen shrub or tree. Moderate to fast growth 10-15' high. Green leaves are up to 5" long. New growth is bright red. Don't be afraid to shear it down to a more moderate size before spring growth starts or after bloom.
Ideal conditions: Average soil. Full sun with good air circulation. Moderate to regular water.
Bloom: Flowers in late spring and early summer white if not cut back.

Euonymous alatus 'fireball' (burning bush)

 
Description: Tightly branched habit with flaming red autumn color. 5-7' tall x 4-5' wide. Hardy to -30 degrees celcius.
Ideal conditions: Full sun. Moderate to less water. Can tolerate drought. The more sun it receives the better show of red.

Ribes sanguineum ( Red flowering currant )

 
Description: Deciduous shrub native to British Columbia. 4-12' tall. Leaves are 2 1/2" long .
Ideal conditions: Sun or part shade. Average soil will do. Moderate to regular water.
Bloom: Deep pink flowers in early spring in a drooping cluster.
Lecothoe fontanesiana 'Rainbow' ( drooping lecothoe )
 
Description: Evergreen. Slow grower 3-4' tall. Branches arch gracefully. Leaves are leathery 3-5" long bronzy red in sun, and bronzy green in shade.
Ideal conditions: Shade to part sun. Sea breeze burns leaves. Acid, woodsy, deep soil. Woodland setting. Requires regular water in summer until established. 
Bloom: Drooping clusters of creamy white flowers in summer.


 

Viburnum bodnantense 'Pink dawn'

 
Description: 10' tall or more. Deciduous. Dark green 1 1/2 -4" long leaves are deeply veined and turn dark scarlet in fall.
Ideal conditions: Average soil . Sun to part sun with shelter from wind and snow if possible.
Bloom: Light pink flowers appear in fall, and bloom through the winter. Buds tend to freeze in coldest northwest winters.

Pieris Japonica ' Mountain Fire '

 
Description: Large evergreen shrub that can reach 5-7' tall by 5' wide. Firey red spring foliage turns to deep green in summer.
Ideal conditions: Part sun to full sun on the coast. Well composted soil with moderate drainage.
Bloom: Clusters of pendulous white flowers appear from early spring to early summer depending on the temps.

Pieris formosa 'Wakehurst '

 
Description: A taller growing pieris reaching 6-8' tall x 5-6' wide. Evergreen.
Ideal Conditions: Takes full sun on coast to part shade. Well drained soil. Regular water, but will tolerate a drought once established .
Bloom: Large bell shaped, flowers that start out with bright red growth and then turn white.

Pieris Japonica 'Forest flame'.

 
Description: A medium height evergreen shrub. New growth is fire red and light yellow .
Ideal Conditions: Takes full sun on coast to part shade. Well drained soil. Regular water, but will tolerate a drought when established .
Bloom: Large white bell shaped flowers hang in grape like clusters.

Pernettya mucronata 'Rosea' ( Rose chilean pernettya )

 
Description: A compact evergreen shrub forming small clumps 2-3' tall x 4' wide. Small leaves are glossy dark green. Some turn red or bronzy in winter.
Ideal conditions: Partial shade with regular water. Acidic soil rich with organic matter.
Bloom: Tiny bell shaped, white to pink flowers appear in late spring, followed by colorful, long lasting berries in pinkish red.

Camellia japonica 'Red'

 
Description: Evergreen shrub of medium height. Bright green to dark glossy leaf.
Ideal conditions: Grow and bloom best when protected from strong sun. Mature plants will tolerate it but flowers tend to get rusty and die quicker in these conditions. Average soil .Organic matter gets a better leaf color. Moderate to regular water.
Bloom: Early to late spring depending on variety.

Camellia Sasanqua

 
Description: Evergreen shrub of medium height. Bright green to dark glossy leaf.
Ideal conditions: Grow and bloom best when protected from strong sun. Mature plants will tolerate it but flowers tend to get rusty and die quicker in these conditions. Average soil. Organic matter gets a better leaf color. Moderate to regular water.
Bloom: November Bright pink with yellow center

Escallonia 'Pink princess'

 
Description: 8-10 ' high and almost as wide. I also have a freak that is much bigger. Leaves are bright green and shiny about 1 1/2" long.
Ideal conditions: Full sun with well drained soil. Moderate water in the summer. Coastal winds are tolerated.
Bloom: The odd one pops out year round , but the majority come in mid summer. The flowers are a vibrant pink in a cluster down the branch.

Escallonia 'Rubra macrantha'

 
Description: Evergreen shrub. 10-12' tall and rising. Almost as wide. Leaves are 1 1/2" long shiny dark green. This is a great hedger. When its cut back it has a great spicy smell. If you clip it back too often though you won't get many blooms.
Ideal conditions: Full sun with well drained soil. Moderate water in the summer. Coastal winds are tolerated.
Bloom: The odd one pops out year round , but the majority come in mid summer. A pleasant rich pink. If you keep it clipped back too much you wont get many blooms.

Weigela florida ' Red Prince '

 
Description: Large deciduous shrub 6-8' tall and about 5' wide. Leaves get a touch of purple in the heat of summer.
Ideal conditions: Full sun or light shade. Regular water, compost, and mulch. You can cut back hard after blooming every 2-3 years, or just take off the spent blooms and remove the oldest canes to the ground.
Bloom: Purpleish red flowers trumpet shaped flowers in late spring.
 

Weigela 'Variegated'

 
Description: Medium height deciduous shrub.5-6' tall by about 4-5' wide. Leaves are about 2" long with a cream border around green. Very attractive in color and holds its shape well too.
Ideal conditions: Full sun or light shade. Regular water, compost, and mulch. Doesn't seem to need much pruning other than removing dead branches.
Bloom: blooms appear late spring to early summer starting out as deep pink and fading to light.

Spiraea Japonica 'Anthony Waterer'

 
Description: A deciduous shrub reaching 3-5' tall and wide. Leaves are up to 1 1/2" long with a serrated edge. They are reddish purple when new maturing to green.
Ideal conditions: I prefer these ones in the full sun on the coast or at least for the first 2/3 of the day. They can get a bit mildewy on top in the shade. Good drainage, compost/mulch and regular water although they will accept drought when established.
Bloom: A large loose spray of burgundy pink flowers in mid summer.

Fushcia 'Riccartonii'

 
Description: A hardy upright fushcia that brightens up a shady spot. 2.5-6' tall by 2-4' wide. Leaves are dark green and narrow up to 1 1/2" long.
Ideal conditions: Part sun with compost/mulch and regular water. Does not appreciate drought.
Bloom: Pendulous flowers dark pink with purple red center start their bloom in early summer and carry through until frost.
 

Pyracantha 'Orange Glow' ( Firethorn )

 
Description: Upright thorny evergreen shrub. This variety starts out quite erect, but as it matures it starts to lean out. Reaches 10-15' tall and wide if left alone. Doesn't mind being pruned back to less.
Ideal Conditions: Sun on the coast all day. Well drained soil with regular water until established.
Bloom: White flowers in spring with brilliant orange berries in fall.

Crinodendron 'Hookerianum'

 
Description: Large evergreen shrub that can reach 25' tall if it lives that long. Stiff branches have narrow sharply toothed leaves that are dark glossy green.
Ideal conditions: Prefers a sunny location, but a cool summer temperature with humidity if possible. Well drained soil with regular water.
Bloom: Large, dark pink, 1" long drooping flowers that hang in clusters similar to cherries.

Hydrangea macrophylla 'Todi' (Red big leaf hydrangea )

 
Description: Small in comparison to other types of mop heads. 3-4' tall and wide. Bright green leaves. Deciduous.
Ideal conditions: Sun to part shade. Rich soil. Regular water.
Bloom: Flower buds open cream colored, and gradually darken to Deep pink.

Gaultheria 'shallon' ( Salal )

 
Description: Evergreen ground cover or shrub. Dark green leaves that are thick and glossy. New growth is light green and favored by florists. Slow growing for first couple of years after planting then it takes off.
Ideal conditions: Prefers a moist forest soil, as it is a coniferous forest undergrowth plant. Will tolerate full sun, but it the leaves tend to burn out. Partial sun shows it well. Regular water.
Bloom: Spring brings thick white flowers that hang down from the branch like lily of the valley. Nectar inside is very sweet. Berries follow in summer which are shaped, and hang similar to the flower. They are a dull shade of dark blue almost black completely edible as is the entire plant.

Abelia x grandiflora ( Glossy Abelia )

 
Description: A very hardy deciduous shrub. 6-10' tall and wide if left unpruned. Can be sheared back annually to maintain a fuller look. Best to wait until after bloom. Small, glossy, dark, green leaves up to 1" long.
Ideal conditions: Sun to part sun. Seems to be happy in most soils that are well draining. Appreciates water regularly, but can take a drought once established.
Bloom: Flowers can appear in late spring until frost depending on how cold the winter has been. Flower buds are reddish brown opening to pale pink.
